<Poem>
<End Poem>
<Translation>
There's a rock, white glistening jade,
There's water in pure rushing flow.
There's an old man with head like snow
Walking back and forth between water and rock.
When he moves forward, he hastens toward nothing im-portant;
When he moves backward, he never enters the mountain's
depths,
For him the depths are too forlorn and vast,
The important ways too difficult and hard.
Neither equals his family pond
Where he's happily at ease
With neither anxiety or care.
There is food right for the mouth,
Wine that reddens the face.
I frolic happily in Tipsy Village
Reaching the Profound Gate unseen, unheard.
I'm conscious of five thousand words
And twelve years of idleness.
I never look back enviously on the wealthy
Nor grasp greedily for the eminent.
I cherish only your occasional visits
From Heavenly Altar Mountain.
